Overview
CTL provides developmental academic support to help students access, engage with, and succeed in their studies.
Our services are designed to support students across the academic journey, from first year through to graduation, by strengthening study and learning skills, promoting self-directed learning, and offering targeted support at key points in the academic year.
Through academic advising, peer-led programmes, tutoring, workshops, and focused development initiatives, CTL helps students navigate university learning with greater clarity and confidence. Working in partnership with faculties and other support units, we help students build academic resilience and make informed decisions about their studies.
Whether you are adjusting to university for the first time, experiencing academic challenges, or looking to improve specific learning skills, this page will help you identify the right support at the right time.

Academic Advising
First Year Experience
Your first-year journey does not end with Orientation – it is only the beginning! That is why CTL developed the First Year Navigator on the LMS.
Tutoring
Tutorials are an important pedagogical tool employed by lecturers to embed deep learning of a given topic into students in a small group setting.
eFundi Support
eFundi is the NWU's learning management system – a learning and teaching platform that connects registered students and lecturers online.
Supplemental Instruction
Supplemental Instruction (SI) is a non-remedial approach to learning that supports students towards academic success by integrating “what to learn” with “how to learn.”
Peer Mentoring
University life can be overwhelming for any first-year student. The peer mentors are available to help you settle in, adjust to higher education, make new friends and connect to the NWU community.
