Crompton and Burke explains in their article, AI in HE: the State of the field, that the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in higher education (HE) has risen quickly in the last 5 years, with a concomitant proliferation of new AI tools available. Scholars report on the affordances of AI to both instructors and students in HE. These benefits include the use of AI in HE to adapt instruction to the needs of different types of learners, in providing customized prompt feedback, in developing assessments, and predict academic success. These studies help to inform educators about how artificial intelligence in education (AIEd) can be used in higher education.
The potential value of AI in HE has also been identified by the NWU in different ways. The UMC of the NWU has for example approved the constitution of an AI Steering Committee in the beginning of 2024 and this committee has developed a Framework Policy for AI at NWU (with a NWU Statement of Intent on AI, as well as Guidelines for the Ethical and Responsible use of AI (listed under Policies).
