Registration Still Open: Enhancing Digital Skills for Historians, Humanities, and Beyond

The Historical Association of South Africa in collaboration with NWU eResearch would like to invite researchers, postgraduate students, and postdoctoral research fellows to participate in the first Digital Humanities workshop offered in conjunction with their annual conference.

The three-day hands-on practical workshop will be facilitated by Dr Adam Crymble, a a lecturer of digital history at the University of Hertfordshire and co-founder of the Programming Historians initiative. The Python module will be facilitated by Mr Petri Jooste, lecturer and IT manager at the North-West University School for Information Technology.  The workshop aims to provide participants with an opportunity to learn about tools related to data management, digitisation, text-mining, data analysis and more. Prerequisites:

No prior programming knowledge is required. The workshop will be presented at a novice level.

  • Workshop 2 – What is XML and why should you care?
  • Workshop 3 –Building a Virtual Archive and Exhibit with Omeka
  • Workshop 4 – Introduction to programming in Python
  • Workshop 5 – Building Digital Maps with Google Fusion Tables
  • Workshop 6 – Extracting Keywords from Texts
