The second South African in-person Carpentry instructor training will take place from 30 April to 2 May in Cape Town and will co-incide with the eResearch Africa Conference.

The workshop will be lead by Dr. Kari L. Jordan, Deputy Director of Assessment (Data Carpentry) and Anelda van der Walt, eResearch Consultant (NWU/Talarify).

The event is a mix of lectures and hands-on lessons where participants will practice giving a short lesson using evidenced-based teaching approaches. This is training for teaching, not technical training; applicants will have to demonstrate experience in using at least one of the tools taught by the Carpentries. The lessons taught at Carpentry workshops are available at www.datacarpentry.org/lessons/ and http://software-carpentry.org/lessons. This workshop is based on the constantly revised and updated curriculum.

The course is aimed at researchers, postgraduates, postdocs, and research support staff affiliated with South African academic or research institutes who are interested in becoming better teachers. In particular, this training is aimed at those who want to become Software and Data Carpentry instructors, run workshops, and contribute to the Carpentry training materials. Successful applicants will be expected to teach a Carpentry workshop within 12 months of completing the training.

R1000 registration fee will be charged to cover travel and accommodation of instructors. Sponsorship may be available upon request with motivation. Participants will be responsible for their own travel and accommodation. Lunch and coffee will be provided daily.
