What is Eduroam?
"eduroam (education roaming) is the secure, world-wide roaming access service developed for the international research and education community. eduroam allows the user from participating institutions to obtain Internet connectivity when visiting other participating institutions by signing on with their institutions credentials." source: www.eduroam.org
Why is Eduroam safer to use than in normal “open spaces” Wi-Fi?
Wi-Fi assaults are more likely when used in public areas. The threat might come from anyone. You could find that it's simpler than you imagine. For instance, File Sharing and AirDrop, are ways for Windows and macOS users to share files with other network users. If you have this enabled, perhaps without realising it, anyone may be able to download your files. To make it harder to be attacked, it's critical to maintain your system and software updated. Attackers constantly devise new techniques to attack users. https://eduroam.org/what-you-need-to-know-about-the-security-of-public-…
Keeping the above in mind, eduroam is based on the most secure encryption and authentication standards currently in use. Its security by far exceeds typical commercial hotspots. Due to end-to-end encryption your private user credentials are only available to your institution. Be aware though that when using the general Internet at an eduroam hotspot, the local site security measures at that hotspot will apply to you as well. For example, the firewall settings at the visited place may be different from those you are used to at home, and as a guest you may have access to fewer services on the Internet than you have at home. https://eduroam.org/eduroam-security/
