Overview
The programme coordinates the evaluation of research entities, oversees research output reporting, and ensures the quality and compliance of publications and creative outputs. It also manages the InfoEd research system, provides training and support, and facilitates key processes such as the IRICO Awards and DHET reporting. Together, these ensure that NWU’s research environment remains efficient, transparent, and aligned with national standards.
Evaluation of Research Entities
Research entities are evaluated in accordance with the institution’s approved schedule. The programme works closely with each entity, providing guidance and support throughout the preparation process to ensure a smooth and effective evaluation.

Overview
Incentives for Research, Innovation and Creative Outputs (IRICO)
The IRICO program recognizes and rewards NWU employees and students whose research, innovation, and creative outputs attract DHET subsidies to the University.
Financial incentives are awarded for:
- Research outputs – DHET-approved journal articles, conference papers, book chapters, and books.
- Innovation outputs – registered patents and plant breeders’ rights.
- Creative outputs – works in visual and fine arts, music, theatre, design, film, and literary arts.
Eligible beneficiaries include permanent, fixed term, and temporary employees, and students who collaborate with staff, subject to the Rules for the Incentives for Research, Innovation and Creative Outputs (IRICO).
