Quality Enhancement in NWU’s Support Departments is dedicated to fostering a culture of excellence and continuous improvement. The team provides vital support by assisting with self-evaluations, facilitating benchmarking and peer evaluation, and guiding the development and maintenance of quality manuals. While ensuring compliance with institutional policies, rules, frameworks and Higher Education Practice Standards (as amended from time to time) the office also helps departments remain in an ongoing cycle of enhancement. This commitment empowers support departments to enable the university’s mission and vision, ensuring that daily operations are effective and the environment is vibrant, supportive, and conducive to academic and institutional success.
Quality Manuals
Quality Manuals document how quality management is operationalised within each department. Manuals describe structures, processes, and procedures. The departments Quality Manual is not a static document but a living document that supports staff orientation, institutional memory, consistency, and evidence-based quality management.
Regulatory Compliance & Professional Bodies
Support departments at NWU actively engage in both internal and external review processes, including thematic and national reviews as guided by the Higher Education Practice Standards (HEPS). These reviews ensure that support services remain aligned with institutional priorities, national expectations, and professional requirements. Beyond academic alignment, support departments are also evaluated on the quality and effectiveness of the support they provide to students and staff, reinforcing NWU’s commitment to regulatory compliance and continuous improvement.
Benchmarking Self- and Peer Evaluations
Benchmarking, self and peer evaluations are essential for NWU’s support departments—whether administrative, general, or professional—because they offer an independent, peer-driven perspective and establish common standards for excellence. These processes help assess progress, highlight areas for improvement, and ensure departments stay relevant and effective within a rapidly changing higher education landscape. By participating in benchmarking and peer reviews, support departments gain objective insights that drive continuous improvement and uphold quality across all facets of the university.
