Welcome to Quality Enhancement (QE) at North-West University

The Quality Enhancement (QE) portfolio supports the University in cultivating an evidence-informed culture of quality, accountability, and continuous improvement across both the academic project and the support environment.

Within the academic project, QE plays a central role in facilitating programme, subject, and thematic evaluations and reviews. These include self-evaluations, peer reviews, external reviews, national reviews, and evaluations by professional, statutory, and non-statutory bodies. These processes enable critical reflection on programme design and delivery, curriculum relevance, teaching and learning, assessment practices, student success, and graduate outcomes. Importantly, areas for improvement are identified and translated into structured improvement plans, supported by systematic progress monitoring. In this way, QE advances an enhancement-led, evidence-informed approach that aligns with national quality assurance requirements and institutional strategic priorities.

Support departments also play a vital role in enabling academic excellence and institutional effectiveness. QE collaborates with these departments through structured evaluations, benchmarking initiatives, and reflective quality processes. This engagement recognises and strengthens their contribution to an integrated Quality Management System that underpins NWU’s core academic mission.

Quality Manuals for faculties and support departments are a key component of NWU’s integrated quality management approach. QE supports the development, review, and continuous refinement of these manuals, which document core processes, roles, controls, and evidence practices. This ensures that institutional processes are clearly articulated, consistently implemented, and aligned across campuses and delivery modes. Informed by national legislation, regulatory frameworks, professional standards, and NWU policies and strategic priorities, these manuals strengthen governance, accountability, compliance, risk management, and ongoing improvement across the University.

The evidence generated through evaluations, reviews, and quality development initiatives contributes to institutional learning and continuous enhancement. This evidence also provides a robust basis for demonstrating NWU’s effectiveness in external quality assurance processes, including those conducted by the Council on Higher Education (CHE) and its subcommittee, the Higher Education Quality Committee (HEQC).

The QE function is represented on a wide range of institutional committees across key domains such as the Senate, teaching and learning, research and innovation, postgraduate and higher degrees, academic standards, Combined Assurance (Risk and Compliance), language provision, health and safety, and continuing education. This representation extends to numerous additional structures not listed here, enabling QE to contribute strategically to institutional governance, promote alignment across functions, and strengthen a coherent, institution-wide culture of continuous quality enhancement.

The QE team welcomes ongoing engagement with colleagues across the University. Staff are encouraged to make use of the information, resources, and processes available on the intranet, as we work together to improve quality in support of NWU’s vision, mission and strategic goals.
