North-West University to Host World Intellectual Property Day 2024

Background
Every year on 26 April, South Africa joins the global community to celebrate World Intellectual Property Day to learn about the role that Intellectual Property (IP) rights play in encouraging innovation and creativity.
In 2000, the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) Member States designated the 26 April as World Intellectual Property Day. WIPO is a global forum for IP services, policies, information and cooperation. The day is aimed at celebrating human creativity, acknowledging the socio-economic importance of IP and the protection thereof, creating awareness about Intellectual Property rights and encouraging creativity and innovation by citizens. The day was celebrated for the first time in 2001 and 26 April 2024 will mark the 23rd celebration of the day worldwide. The celebrations target the public, youth, academics, organized and small businesses, the legal fraternity and government departments involved in the field of Intellectual Property.
Objectives of the April 2024 South African World IP Day Celebration
The World Intellectual Property Day aims to achieve the following:
To create a general awareness of Intellectual Property (IP)
To highlight the importance of IP
To create awareness of the importance of protecting IP Rights
To create respect for IP
To position the partners as key role players on matters of Intellectual Property in South Africa
