IP and music: Feel the beat of IP

Are you a passionate singer or musician? Do you have what it takes to showcase the harmony between music, innovation, and Intellectual Property (IP) rights?

The World IP Day 2025 Competition is here! Technology Transfer and Innovation Support (TTIS) is calling on all NWU students to unleash their creativity by submitting a 60 to 90-second video recording that captures how music, IP rights, and innovation are shaping our future.

Entry Rules
Here are the entry rules:
  1. Make 60 seconds video clip, with both voice and visuals;
  2. Use your mobile phone to shoot the video;
  3. Present your idea in English;
  4. Introduce yourself by stating your name and field of study. For example, "I am Jabu Mahlangu, a second-year engineering student at NWU.";
  5. Only  NWU registered students younger than 30 years can participate;
  6. Explain a community or global problem you are targeting and the solution you are offering/proposing, explain what type of Intellectual Property will be involved. (https://www.wipo.int/about-ip/en/);
  7. Identify the relevant SDGs your project or idea relates to. For example: “This project addresses SDGs 2 (Zero Hunger) and 10 (reduced inequalities).”
  8. Submit your video clip by 2:00 PM on 19 April 2024 using the provided link (see “How to Enter”);
  9. The judges' decision will be final;
  10. Only individual entries are accepted;
  11. Entrants may submit up to 3 different projects/ video clips each;
  12. If you use visuals from a third party, like a news clip, make sure to give credit.;

Prizes
There will be 3 winners announced at each event.
They will be announced at a ceremony celebrating World IP Day and the SDGs, where several Government and industry partners will be in attendance.  These will be held on 25 April at Mahikeng (for Mahikeng Campus entrants) and 26 April (for Potchefstroom Campus entrants as well as Vanderbijlpark Campus entrants).

Prizes include:
Winner: R3,000 restaurant voucher
2nd Prize: R2,000 restaurant voucher
3rd Prize: R1,000 restaurant voucher

Practical tips
  1. Read about the SDGs here
  2. Plan your video content carefully to fit into 60 seconds
  3. Have a friend to help you record.
  4. Record close-ups for better sound
  5. Speak naturally without reading from a script
  6. Be enthusiastic and smile.
  7. If you want to include visuals other than yourself, find someone who can help you edit the video clip.  (Ask around on campus, or download an editing app).
  8. Avoid saying "uhm"

Here are the entry rules:

Eligibility:

  • Open to all registered NWU students.
  • Entries can be submitted individually or as a group (maximum of 5 members per group).

Submission Requirements:

  • Submit a 60 to 90-second video of yourself or your group singing, producing a music beat, or playing a musical instrument.
  • Submissions must be original and created by the participants (no covers, remixes, or copyrighted material).
  • The video should have clear audio and video quality for proper assessment.

Judging Criteria:

  • Creativity and originality of the submission.
  • Technical skill and quality of the performance or production.
  • Relevance to music, IP rights, and innovation.

Deadline & Disqualification:

  • Entries must be submitted by [insert deadline].
  • Any submission containing AI-generated, or copyrighted content will be immediately disqualified.

Notification of Winners:

  • 3 Lucky Winners – R2,000 Takealot Voucher Each!
  • Only winners will be notified.

General Conditions:

  • The judges’ decision is final and cannot be appealed.
