Implementation of examination hall tickets for June 2025 onwards

The NWU implemented the Student Information System as the main platform for student records and the administration of a student's academic lifecycle. Included to the platform is a new functionality whereby students' attendance and participation in an examination opportunity is registered and recorded with scanners, thereby ensuring that their marks are accurately recorded.

Take note! The examination period will continue as scheduled.

How do I download my Exam Hall Ticket via the Student Portal?

Please refer to the step-by-step guide

Should I still bring my STUDENT ACCESS CARD?

YES! You must also bring your student access card with you to the venue where you write your exam.

How will this change impact me?

  • For the MAY-JULY 2025 examination period, as well as future opportunities, students will be required to present a ticket - called a "hall ticket" - at the examination venue, that will allow access to the examination venue.
  • This hall ticket will be scanned by an invigilator, upon which you will be issued your answer booklet, containing a barcode.
  • At the end of each exam, your answer booklet will be scanned back by the invigilator using the barcode.
  • The above will form the record of your attendance and participation in the specific examination session.

What will happen at the venue where I write my exam paper?

  1. Students are required to arrive at the examination venue at least 30 minutes prior to the commencement of the session, to ensure that all students are timeously scanned and seated.
  2. The examination rules of the NWU remain applicable in all examination opportunities.
  3. When arriving at the venue, your hall ticket will be scanned, as well as the barcode on the answer booklet issued to you.
  4. Once your ticket and barcode have been scanned, your mobile device must be turned off and put away as per instruction of the invigilator.
  5. You may only have your writing materials with you, as well as your hall ticket (if printed).
  6. Note, the invigilators will check your hall ticket to ensure no notes are written on it.
  7. Once you have finished writing, you will submit your answer booklet to the invigilator who will scan the barcode printed on the front page. Your hall ticket will not be scanned again when submitting the booklet.

Which of my modules will show on my exam hall ticket?

You will only see those modules for which you are scheduled to write an examination on your exam hall ticket. Therefore, year modules and modules subject to continuous assessment will not reflect on your exam hall ticket. However, to see when you will write your year modules during the exam period (if applicable to you), please consult the official NWU examination time table

When will I be able to download my ticket from the Student Portal?

  • Your hall ticket will be available prior to the commencement of the examination opportunity.
  • A specific announcement will be made once hall tickets are available to download.

How should I bring my hall ticket to the exam?

  1. Refer to the steps-guide on how to download your hall ticket.
  2. You will be required to download it from the Student Portal, and it is suggested that you print the hall ticket to bring to the exam venues.
  3. However, you can also have your downloaded hall ticket available on your mobile device. Hall tickets cannot be scanned from mobile devices with damaged screens, please print the hall ticket if your mobile device's screen is damaged.
  4. The ticket you download will be used for the full duration of the first examination opportunity for all the exam papers you write. You do not need to print a new ticket for each exam paper.
  5. Should you write a second exam opportunity, you will be required to download a new hall ticket for the second exam opportunity.

What will my hall ticket look like?

I cannot access my examination hall ticket and receive an error message

  • If you are unable to access your hall ticket, you must consult your examination timetable to see when and where you will be writing your exam.
  • You may then proceed to the exam venue, presenting your student card as proof of identity.
  • Students who cannot download their hall ticket will have their attendance registered manually.
  • Therefore, it is vital that you first try to download your hall ticket.
  • You will be allowed to write the exam.

I have uploaded my photo, but it is not reflecting on the examination hall ticket

  • Note: If you've successfully uploaded your photo, but it does not reflect on your exam hall ticket, please be aware that there may be a delay in the upload process. Therefore, your photo might not appear immediately on your exam hall ticket. If this happens, please wait 10-15 minutes and try to generate your exam hall ticket again.
  • If the photo you uploaded is not displaying on your examination hall ticket this will not invalidate your ticket.
  • Present the hall ticket as is, together with your student card as proof of identity at the examination venue.
  • The hall ticket remains important as this will link your answer script with your profile on your Student Portal.

I cannot see my participation marks on the Student Portal

  • The university’s academic and Faculty rules apply in all examination instances.
  • Therefore, you will still require a qualifying participation mark for your modules to write the exams.
  • If your participation is not visible on your Student Portal, you can contact your lecturer to obtain the participation mark.
  • Please note; if you do not qualify for an exam opportunity due to an insufficient participation mark and proceed to write the exam, any marks obtained during the specific exam opportunity will be disregarded in accordance with the relevant university and Faculty rules.

Enquiries on Examination Hall Tickets
