The NWU’s Khayalethu residence has stepped up its support for under-resourced schools in the vicinity of the Mahikeng Campus. On 17 May, as part of its community engagement programme, a team from the residence visited Molelwane Secondary School in Mahikeng to provide academic and nutrition support for Grade 12 learners.

During the visit, the Khayalethu Residence Committee assisted learners in completing online applications to tertiary institutions and distributed NWU pamphlets on options beyond matric, including academic programmes available to them.

Part of a broader effort to contribute

Jakalase Lindela, campus and student experience officer at Khayalethu residence, said the visit was part of a broader effort to support learners in under-resourced schools.

“We partnered with Molelwane Secondary School to assist learners with online applications and to explain the admission point score system,” said Jakalase. “The support is not limited to opportunities at the NWU; we want learners to understand and explore all available post-school options.”

As part of the engagement, Khayalethu residence also conducted a sanitary pad donation drive to support young girls at the school.

“In line with our house parent’s initiative, we donated sanitary pads to ensure learners do not miss school due to lack of basic hygiene products,” Jakalase said.

The visit followed a meeting with the principal and deputy principal of Molelwane Secondary School in April, where they welcomed the proposed collaboration. They outlined challenges facing the school and emphasised the importance of academic and material support for their learners.

“This programme is about more than one visit. We have established a WhatsApp group to maintain communication with the learners and share study materials going forward,” said Jakalase.

Food security is a priority

The residence has also included food security in its plan of action, following a workshop on the Zero Hunger Green Campus Initiative. In collaboration with Thutong residence, a soup drive has also been included in its ongoing community support initiatives.

The collaboration with Molelwane Secondary School is part of Khayalethu’s commitment to promoting educational access and support for learners in surrounding communities.
