Please note: There are 8 basic steps to consider during the planning of your engaged research activity, 4 basic steps during the planning of your engaged teaching and learning activity and 4 basic steps during the planning of you outreach activity.

If no, please contact SCI (johannes.kwena@nwu.ac.za / 018-285-2598) for assistance.

If no, you need to make (an) appointment(s) with the community’s leadership (traditional and/or political) so that you can explain to them who you are, what you want to do in the community, get their input and buy-in and ultimately their goodwill permission. You will also need the community’s goodwill permission for your ethics application. SCI can help you with this and can also facilitate the process for you (bibi.bouwman@nwu.ac.za / 018-299-4220)

If no, please contact the office for SCI for a consultation/ inputs (hendri.coetzee@nwu.ac.za/ 018-299-4280).

If no, please contact the chairperson/office of your faculty’s scientific/research committee (these committees are typically linked to research entities). The contact details for your faculty’s scientific/research committee can also be obtained from your deputy dean for CE or faculty coordinator for CE. Please also ask your deputy dean or faculty coordinator or responsible support staff in your faculty to record your activity on your faculty’s database for reporting purposes (see template on NWU website for CE). He/she will need the name of your activity/project, the aim/objectives of your activity, an indication of the type of activity and an indication of your outputs/outcomes and actual/potential impact.

If yes, please make sure that your activity is recorded on your faculty’s database and go to question 7.

If no, please contact Ethics-HRECApply@nwu.ac.za. A list of supporting documents can also be obtained from the ethics office website: http://health-sciences.nwu.ac.za/healthethics/hrec. Please remember that you will also need to have the necessary protocols in place for Covid-19 (see http://health-sciences.nwu.ac.za/covid-19-management).

If no, and if you need help/ support, please contact SCI (hendri.coetzee@nwu.ac.za/ 018-299-4280).

If yes, please go-ahead with your research. Please stick to your approved protocol and notify the ethics office, if any changes occur/ if you encounter ethical problems. Please remember to follow Covid-19 guidelines.

Engaged Teaching and Learning
